The Sleepaway Camp franchise is a great option for horror fans in need of a summer camp slasher series – and the following list explains how to watch the Sleepaway Camp movies in order. Unlike Friday the 13th, which shares a similar setting, Sleepaway Camp has a much more complicated timeline. Fortunately, the below guide makes sense of the films, making it easy for viewers to dig in.

The popular film series begins with 1983’s Sleepaway Camp. Several installments in the Friday the 13th series had made their way to the big screen by this point, but Sleepaway Camp set itself apart with its focus on young children actually attending the titular camp. In fact, the franchise’s primary antagonist, Angela Baker, makes their debut as one of the campers in the original film. Felissa Rose, who played the shy and mysterious character, was recast several times before returning herself in 2008’s Return to Sleepaway Camp.

In a vein similar to Halloween, there are several continuities branching from the original film for this particular franchise, and one includes a film that wasn’t even finished. As the film was released in some form, however, we’ve included it in the list below for how to watch the Sleepaway Camp movies in order by release. Though due to its confusing and incomplete narrative, it’s being excluded from any particular continuity to better explain how to watch the Sleepaway Camp movies in order. It’s more of a novelty that should be viewed outside of the core franchise.

Sleepaway Camp Movies in Order (Release)

  • Sleepaway Camp (1983)
  • Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (1988)
  • Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland (1989)
  • Return to Sleepaway Camp (2008)
  • Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor (2012)

Now let’s make sense of this franchise. The original three films do follow a shared continuity – with the opening of Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers directly acknowledging the events of the original film. Although II and III are extremely different from the original in terms of tone, they do feature the return of Angela Baker, and they are fairly easy to follow along with. Bruce Springsteen’s sister, Pamela Springsteen, takes the part of the older Angela for the final two films of this trilogy. And, truthfully, they’re trademark films of the video store era. The box art for the original film was iconic enough – but they certainly did their best to compete with II and III, with the second film poking fun at Jason’s hockey mask and Freddy’s glove both on the artwork and in the movie itself.

Sleepaway Camp Movies in Order (Original Continuity)

  • Sleepaway Camp (1983)
  • Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (1988)
  • Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland (1989)

Unfortunately, fans never received a proper fourth film. The aforementioned Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor began filming in 1992 as a very different follow-up to the trilogy, but it was never completed, so fans were left with a 70-minute film in 2012 that utilized archival footage from the earlier installments to tell a story. It did not feature the return of Felissa Rose or Pamela Springsteen as Angela, however, and fans debate its authenticity to this day. A more direct sequel to the original film, with Felissa Rose returning as Angela, was released in 2008 titled Return to Sleepaway Camp. Interestingly, it also suffered behind-the-scenes issues, having first started production in 2003. Original writer and director Robert Hiltzik returned to write and direct the installment as well. His involvement along with the return of Rose give the film a closer tone to the original, and actor Jonathan Tiersten even returned as Angela’s cousin Ricky from the first film. While the first sequels to the original have more of a cult following, there are fans who appreciate Return for being a sequel more true to the original.

Sleepaway Camp Movies in Order (New Continuity)

  • Sleepaway Camp (1983)
  • Return to Sleepaway Camp (2008)

Originally, Robert Hiltzik hoped to make an additional follow-up to his continuity that would feature the return of Desiree Gould as Angela’s Aunt Martha from the original film. Her unexplored character would have opened up plenty of new narratives for the franchise. Unfortunately, plans never got off the ground, and Gould passed away in 2021. It seems as though this sealed the new continuity’s fate. Now, more recent news confirms Hiltzik’s plans to write and direct a Sleepaway Camp remake with Kenan Thompson’s AFA attached to produce. It looks like the Sleepaway Camp franchise will finally be moving away from sequels and providing fans with its first full-blown remake. It’ll definitely add another interesting layer when trying to watch the Sleepaway Camp movies in order.
